Over time, any jewelry are tarnished or are affected by discoloration due to exposure to humidity and sunlight. This also occurs cause we don’t keep it as our habit to clean it with a cloth or cotton ball after using them. The sweat, perfumes and lotions also are some of the reasons to discoloration of Gold and silver Jewelry.
So this Festive season, use this hacks and wear your old jewelry as new ones.
- Ketchup:-
The Easiest and most accessible method is by using Ketchup. Take a small amount of ketchup on a cotton cloth and rub the tarnished jewelry clean with it or you can take the ketchup in the bowl and dip your said jewelry in it for not more than five minute, give it a little rub with your fingers or toothbrush and later wash it off with clean water. The tomato acid and vinegar from the ketchup are what helps in getting rid of that discoloration. Its important to towel dry the jewelry well to not be again affected by the humidity. Pack them up in an air-tight plastic bag or a box. - Baking Soda or Toothpaste:-
Place a little amount of either baking soda or toothpaste on your toothbrush, scrub your jewelry well with it, the bristles of toothbrush helps in cleaning the grooves of your jewelry. Wash it off later through the clean water and towel dry it. You could use Q-tips to dry off the water from the grooves. - Lemon + Baking Soda:-
In a Bowl make a thick paste of Lemon Juice and Baking Soda in a ratio of 1:4. Scrub your silver accessories with this paste using a toothbrush, at the end wash it off with clear water and later towel dry it well. - Shampoo:-
Take a bowl and pour water and shampoo in it according to the number and size of your jewelry. Mix them well, dip the jewelry in there and let it stay in for next half an hour. After half an hour, place the bowl on stove and heat the mixture until it rises up, once done switch it off after five minutes. Drain the water out and towel dry the jewelry. - Dishwasher and Lemon Oil:-
Make a mixture of Dishwasher and lemon oil in a warm water and dip your jewelry in the solution for 10-15 minutes. Scrub them off with a toothbrush followed by washing them off with clean water and towel drying to remove any single drop of water to stick to the jewelry.
Preventive measure:-
- The jewelry you wear must not be sprayed with perfume or any other sprays. Perform this task before putting on the jewelry so that the chemicals contained in the perfume or spray would not contaminate the metal of the jewelry.
- The necklace, ring or bracelet must only be put on after the cream or lotion you have applied has been absorbed by your skin or has dried.
- Keep your jewelry in a separate jewelry box or place it in a soft cloth after cleaning to avoid any blemishes.
