Many of us spend the night in slow motion waiting for some sleep to come. Just lying in bed, glaring at the clock which seems to not moving at all is the story of your life? Welcome, to the world of sleeplessness. Sleep disorders right from insomnia to sleep apnea takes a toll on majority of the people. The reason for sleep disorders could be due to over thinking about work issue or maybe taking care of a sick person at home.

However, sleeping problems may arise due to over consumption of caffeine or alcohol or may be a side effect of medications, or can develop as secondary effects of another illness, such as arthritis, or a bladder condition, or a psychological disorder such as depression. But majority of the sleeping disorder cases are due to the cause of sleeplessness or disrupted sleep.

  1. Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder:
  2. When a person’s biological clock gets out of sync with accepted norms, sleep disorders arise. Here the person falls asleep and awakens later than required for normal activities such as work and school. Once the person falls asleep his or her sleep is restful and uninterrupted. Awakening at an acceptable time, even with an alarm clock, is extremely difficult.

  3. Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder:
  4. In such a condition the person’s biological clock shifts to earlier hours. So what happens is that the person typically falls asleep before 9 p.m. and awakens between 3 and 5 a.m. and find hard to go back to sleep.

  5. Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Syndrome:
  6. In non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome, the person’s biological clock is 25 hours or longer, meaning that sleep and wake times are continually getting later. Just to clear the air, this condition is extremely rare. But it is common in the blind than in the general population.

  7. Jet Lag:
  8. This is also known as e-zone change. This is a disruption in sleep patterns following travel across time zones. It occurs because the traveler’s internal “clock” is out of sync with the new time zone.

  9. Shift Work:
  10. The constant changing of sleep patterns among day, evening and night shifts has been linked to gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disease, increases in alcohol and tranquilizer use, and chronic sleep disorders.

  11. Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
  12. It is the temporary cessation of breathing due to the blockage of the upper airways during sleep. Such obstructions leads to sleep interruptions each hour, which later affects the quality of sleep. Since the in between awakenings are rarely remembered, sleep apnea sufferers are unaware of the symptoms.

  13. Narcolepsy:
  14. It is observed by extreme, overwhelming sleepiness during the day. The main cause of it is due to dysfunction of the brain mechanisms controlling sleep and waking. In such cases a person may suddenly fall asleep in mid sentence, while at work, or behind the wheel of a car.

  15. Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS):
  16. What happens in RLS is that aching, itching, tingling and burning in the lower legs is experienced and the sufferer just falls asleep. The aching may also be attended by periodic limb movements that may continue for minutes or hours. It seen typically developing in middle age people.

  17. Sleepwalking:
  18. This is the most common sleeping disorder in children which occurs during stage 3 and stage 4 sleep, which is the deepest levels, and is thought to be caused by a partial arousal from deep sleep. The sleepwalker moves as though he is awake. The sleepwalker usually has no recollection of the event in the morning.
